Chapter Six

The night was eerily quiet. Nigel kept his eyes peeled for Nash but couldn’t help wondering if Hunters were lurking in the woods. His nerves were wound tight. Hondo spent most of his time leaning against the truck, staring at his phone. His mom drifted in and out of sleep next to him, and Nigel could tell that she struggled to keep her eyes open.

It was two in the morning, but Nigel wasn’t tired. He just sat there praying as he watched for his mate. His fingers curled tightly around the steering wheel when he heard rapid gunfire. The sky flared a bright orange as smoke billowed past the treetops.

Nigel rolled his window down. “What’s going on?”

Hondo had tucked his phone away and was scanning the area. “Looks like they’ve been discovered.”

Nigel felt as though he would be sick. His stomach rolled as his grip on the steering wheel tightened until the color bled from his knuckles. The gunfire continued. The blaze grew. Somewhere closer, growls erupted. Nigel’s instincts were to run and find Nash.

He turned when he heard a gasp. His mother was staring at the fire licking skyward.

“Charles,” she whispered. Her hand fluttered to her chest as Nigel looked away.

A sense of urgency overwhelmed him. What if Nash was hurt? What if Hunters had captured him? Nigel couldn’t simply sit there any longer. He had to do something. When he opened the truck door, Hondo slammed it shut while shaking his head.

“Don’t even think about it. You’re safest here.”

“But Nash isn’t,” he argued. “Don’t you hear all that gunfire? What if he was hit?”

“I hear it.” Hondo nodded. “But you’re still not going. I promised Nash to keep you safe, and that’s exactly what I’m gonna do.”

Movement behind Hondo caught Nigel’s attention. He shouted the warning too late as two men rushed from the trees and attacked. A third headed straight for Nigel. His mom snarled as she shifted into her wolf form, then bit the man’s arm as he reached through the open window.

Nigel screamed when the stranger raised a handgun and shot his mother. She yelped and collapsed onto the seat. Nigel shifted, snarling before he chomped down on the man’s hand.

“You fucking freak of nature.” The stranger had to be a Hunter. He rammed the butt of the gun against Nigel’s head until Nigel had no other choice than to let go. He tasted the Hunter’s blood as the Hunter opened the truck door.

Nigel leaped out before the man could get his hands on him.

Flames engulfed Hondo’s body as he grabbed one of the Hunters by the throat and used his free hand to shoot fireballs at the other.

“Run, Talbot!” the Hunter dodging the fireballs shouted to the man attacking Nigel.

“You think you’ll stop us?” Talbot asked. “We’re everywhere. You’ll never get rid of us, but we’re gonna get rid of you and your freakish friends.”

Nigel took off down the path that led to the compound. He ducked when gunfire erupted behind him, and a bullet whizzed past his ear.
